A Guide to Tropical Fish Breeding

The process of tropical fish breeding is really not difficult job if you are aware of what you are doing. One of the most important steps in tropical fish breeding is determining the sex of the fish. Most fishes can be classified either as sexually dimorphic or isomorphic. The real way to be able to tell between the sexes is to look at the shape of the genital papilla, which is only visible around spawning times.

Selecting the Parent Fish

After identifying dimorphic and isomorphic fishes, the next step in tropical fish breeding is to select the parent fish. For that distinguish between the males and the females, and choose a suitable pair to be the parent fish. You should make sure that for this you choose a fish that displays good markings and color, because this will in turn produce attractive baby fishes.

Also you want to be sure to use only mature and healthy fish for spawning because if unhealthy fish spawns, it may result in the production of weak and unhealthy or deformed young.  You also need to avoid breeding different strains or color forms, because the young then often turn out to be rather unattractive. Care should be taken to produce the most attractive and healthy fish that you possibly can.

Preparing the Parent Fish

Now the next step in the tropical fish breeding process is to prepare the parent fish. For this you need to feed the fish a variety of healthy foods so that you can get them in top healthy. Some fishes can be made healthier simply by using a regular well-balanced flake fish food, while some others l have to be fed with  specific live foods such as shrimp, insect larvae, and flying insects.

You will have to do some research on the particular fish that you are using to breed in order to learn about what specific conditioning methods to use, but remember that all this time and effort your put in beforehand will be well worth it in the end.

There are a few final steps to the tropical fish breeding process, including breeding the parent fish and then raising the spawn. As long as you take your time, make yourself informed as possible along every step of the way and do everything correctly, then you should come out with some really great results.
